How to Choose the Right Placemat Size
To choose a round placemat size, measure your plate first, then check how much space the setting uses on your table. A larger diameter leaves more of the woven border visible, while a smaller one can work where table space is limited. The right choice depends on your dinnerware and layout rather than the number of seats alone.
Laquedecraft's round corn husk, round seagrass and round water hyacinth listings offer 11.8, 13.8 and 15-inch diameters. Available size-and-set combinations vary.
Round placemat size chart
| Diameter in inches | Approximate diameter in cm | Border around a centered 10-inch plate |
|---|---|---|
| 11.8 inches | 30 cm | 0.9 inch per side, about 2.3 cm |
| 13.8 inches | 35.1 cm | 1.9 inches per side, about 4.8 cm |
| 15 inches | 38.1 cm | 2.5 inches per side, about 6.4 cm |
The border examples are calculated for a centered, round 10-inch plate; they are not measurements of a pictured table setting. One inch equals 2.54 cm. Natural materials and hand weaving can create small variations in the finished piece.
Step 1: Measure the widest part of your plate
Lay a ruler or tape measure across the plate through its center. Measure the outer rim, not just the flat area where food sits. If you use a charger beneath your dinner plate, measure the charger because it determines how much of the placemat remains visible.
For oval or rectangular dinnerware, check both the width and length. A round placemat may sit under the central part of the plate without extending beyond every edge; decide whether that is the look you want.
Step 2: Calculate the border you would like to see
Visible border per side = (placemat diameter minus plate diameter) divided by 2. This applies to centered round plates and round placemats.
For example, a 10-inch plate on an 11.8-inch placemat leaves approximately 0.9 inch on each side. The same plate on a 15-inch placemat leaves 2.5 inches. Neither is a universal rule: the first keeps the setting compact, while the second shows more woven texture.
If the plate is wider than the placemat, the plate will extend beyond it. Check that fit deliberately rather than assuming every dinner plate works with every diameter.
Step 3: Test the footprint on your table
Use paper to mark or cut circles matching the diameters you are considering. Place them at the seats you use most often, then add your plates, cutlery, glasses and serving dishes. This simple mock-up helps you see whether adjacent settings overlap or crowd the center.
On a round table, check the space nearest the center, where settings converge. On a rectangular table, include the end seats. Leave room for people to move comfortably and for the meal you actually serve.
Step 4: Choose the number of placemats
The three Laquedecraft round placemat listings offer sets of 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12. Choose for the seats you regularly set, then decide whether you want extra pieces for guests. Confirm the selected pack on the product page before adding it to your cart.
Frequently asked questions
Is 15 inches always the best size?
No. It shows a wider border around the same plate, but takes up more space. Measure and test the layout before choosing.
Can I choose a size based only on my table's seat count?
Seat count helps with set quantity, but does not establish the right diameter. Plate size, table shape and spacing between settings matter too.
Does material change the measuring method?
The diameter calculation is the same for these round placemats. Choose the material separately using our corn husk, seagrass and water hyacinth comparison.
